This paper assesses the biodiversity enhancement performance of the Pretul Wind Park, Styria, Austria against the ten IUCN Good Practice Principles for biodiversity enhancement at wind and solar developments. Key enhancement measures include renaturalisation of the Schwarzriegelmoos raised bog, reforestation with over 1,500 native trees, targeted habitat improvements for black grouse and capercaillie, protective elevated footbridges and platforms to reduce trampling, and integrated scenic trails that guide tourism away from sensitive zones. The evaluation is based on analysis of EIA reports, baseline surveys (2013–2014), long-term monitoring data, ofÏcial project documentation, and an interview with the operator (Österreichische Bundesforste). Seven of the ten principles are fully met, supported by early, evidence-based, additional, measurable, and timely actions that deliver verifiable net-positive outcomes. The remaining three principles, which concern stakeholder engagement, management, monitoring, reporting, and long-term sustainability, are only partly met due to regionally focused engagement, operator-led oversight, and absence of explicit perpetual or post-decommissioning mechanisms. The study demonstrates that alpine wind projects can exceed legal requirements and achieve meaningful biodiversity gains, but stronger inclusivity, comprehensive ecosystem monitoring, and secured long-term legacy instruments are essential for full IUCN alignment and genuine nature-positive impact.
